United have a legitimate interest in signing Adrien Rabiot this summer and a report in Italy suggests a shock swap-deal could be suggested.

Juve Dipendenza reiterate United are working to sign Rabiot from Juventus, and they add that Scott McTominay could move in the opposite direction. Manchester United taking steps to improving their midfield following the opening weekend defeat to Brighton by moving for Adrien Rabiot.



United have agreed a fee in principle with Juventus for the Frenchman of £15million rising to £20m but have to negotiate personal terms with the player's agent - his mother. Erik ten Hag has made plenty of changes on Sunday which was to be expected after playing Atletico Madrid yesterday. The main talking point with today's team news is that Cristiano Ronaldo makes his first start of pre-season.

Sources say Rabiot's mother, Veronique, is the "only stumbling block" as United have to agree satisfactory personal terms.

The Manchester Evening News understands there was an acceptance at United late last week they had to pursue alternative midfielders to Frenkie de Jong, despite agreeing an €85million fee with Barcelona last month.

United have not ended pursuit of De Jong but club sources said fall-back targets were being kept "warm" as a deal for De Jong is in the balance.

Before kick-off, a supporter ascending the steps in the south stand en route to their seat paused and got my attention. "Arnautovic: is it true?"

"For United's sake, I hope not." The supporter laughed and crossed his fingers. Unfortunately for United followers, it is true.

United have bid €8million for a former Stoke and West Ham forward who is 33-years-old, last played in England three years ago, spent two of those years in the Chinese Super League and plays as though he belongs in a different decade. World Cup pitch invader won't face legal action - but will be kicked out of Qatar Welcome back to the Chris Farnell football news blog. Mario Ferri, 35, ran onto the pitch during the Group H game between Portugal and Uruguay at the Lusail Stadium on Monday.  A protester who ran onto the pitch during Portugal's match against Uruguay will not face any further legal action - but is being removed from Qatar. Mario Ferri was seen sprinting onto the grass at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar on Monday waving a rainbow flag and wearing a T-shirt that read "Save Ukraine" on the front and "Respect for Iranian women" on the back. The 35-year-old was quickly chased and detained by security officials.  On Tuesday, Mr Ferri, who describes himself as a footballer and influencer, told his Instagram followers he had been released by the Qatari authorities.
